After our concert in Valencia, we take our way to Peñafiel. Tomorrow we have hard working day ahead of us, in there we will try to finish the production of DK <qumran>, our documentary film, with Josetxo Silguero.

After our first work meeting, where we discussed the filming plans with the crew in the location self, we could enjoy the breathtaking Castilian landscapes, visible from the hill on top of which Bodegas Qumrán is situated. The day was wonderful, the company even better. As if that were not enough, the next days we will count on the presence of the architects Álvaro Solis and Sandra Hernández, the creators of the winery, who will contribute with invaluable clues and points of view regarding their work.
On the other hand, today was the first rehearsal with Josetxo Silguero, who arrived yesterday evening from Madrid, where he was working in the recording of a CD with the members of Sigma Project Quartet.
Everybody is preparing the last touches and today we have to finish the last details. This afternoon we will make the first technical tests at the auditorum of Peñafiel. It is going to be an exciting day.
Tras nuestra primera reunión de trabajo, donde discutimos los planes de rodaje junto con el equipo técnico sobre el propio terreno, pudimos disfrutar de los impresionantes paisajes castellanos divisables desde la loma de Bodegas Qumrán en un día inmejorable y sobre todo, en buenísima compañía. Por si fuera poco, en los próximos días contaremos con la presencia de los arquitectos Álvaro Solis y Sandra Hernández, los artífices de la bodega, quienes nos aportarán claves y enfoques visuales importantísimos de su creación.
Por otra parte, hoy dan comienzo los ensayos con Josetxo Silguero, llegado ayer por la noche desde Madrid donde ha grabado un disco con los integrantes del cuarteto de saxofones Sigma Project.
Todo el mundo prepara los últimos retoques, y hoy toca ultimar todos los detalles. Esta tarde realizaremos las primeras pruebas técnicas con la equipación del auditorio de Peñafiel. Va a ser un día emocionante.
After a journey free of incidents, we arrived to Peñafiel, and today we are about to start the first work meeting to discuss the organizational aspects of the documentary.
Everybody in Peñafiel is ready to start the grape harvesting season, which promises to be specially good this year. You can feel a sort of tranquil expectation in town, while in the fields farmers and vine growers throw themselves in a frenetic activity.
Also in Bodegas Qumran, where this week there will start not only the filming of the documentary of the same name, but also the harvest. There is a lot of work to do, but everybody is very excited about this new artistic and enologic adventure.
Tras un viaje sin incidentes, hemos llegado a Peñafiel y hoy nos disponemos a hacer la primera reunión de trabajo para hablar sobre los aspectos organizativos del documental.
Todo el mundo se está preparando para comenzar la vendimia, que promete ser especialmente próspera este año. En el pueblo reina una especie de expectación tranquila mientras en los campos labradores y viticultores se lanzan a una actividad frenética.
También en Bodegas Qumrán, donde esta semana, además de grabarse el documental que lleva su nombre, dará comienzo la campaña de recogida. Mucho trabajo, pero también, una ilusión enorme por esta nueva aventura artística y enológica.
Coinciding with the beginning of the grape harvesting in the Ribera del Duero, on the 26th september avant-garde sounds and images inspired by the architecture of Bodegas Qumrán will be heard in the Cultural Center of Peñafiel [Valladolid, ES]. The audience of this recital will assist to the preview of the series DK <qumran>: Between the East and the West. The author of this work is Ángel Arranz [1976], Spanish composer, sonologist and musicologist born in this same city and living in The Netherlands. He is associated researcher at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague as well as artistic director of the multidisciplinary collective The DK <projection>, who will be in charge of carrying out this innovative event.
The concert, sponsored by Bodegas y Viñedo Qumrán and made possible with the collaboration of the Peñafiel City Council, will start at 20:30h. This preview concert will be the colophon of a documentary produced and filmed the previous days by The DK <projection>.
DK <qumran> is a monographic multimedia show consisting on three music compositions by Ángel Arranz inspired by Bodegas Qumrán. This avant-garde winery situated in the Ribera del Duero area has been designed by the Barcelona-based architecture firm Konkrit Blu. In this recital of instrumental music assisted by electronic media will perform international artists and soloist of wide renown such as the saxophonist Josetxo Silguero, the percussionist Raphaël Simon and the visual artist Beatriz del Saz.
In words of the platform self, in this wide-range cultural event, “the dialogue between architecture and music proposed by Konkrit Blu and Ángel Arranz aims to continue an universal artistic tradition still to be further explored in the history of Spain”. They say that “this path starts in Florencia en 1436, with the collaboration between the architect Filippo Brunelleschi and the chapel-master Guillaume Dufay, and it is not realized again until the 20th and 21th centuries”, with scarce examples such as the collaboration in 1958 between the architect Le Corbusier, the composer and architect Iannis Xenakis and the composer Edgard Varèse in the Phillips Pabilion in Brusels; the piece Prometeo by the composer Luigi Nono, created with the contributions of the architect Renzo Piano in 1984 and performed in Venice and Milan; or more recently in 2004 with the artistic tandem formed by the architect Lars Spuybroek and the sound artist Edin van der Heide for the creation of the interactive sound installation Son-O-House in the small Dutch city of Son-e-Breugel.
The firs piece of this series, Qumran for saxophone and electronics, will be premiered on the 19th november thi year with occasion of the 23th International Electronic Music Festival Punto de Encuentro in Valencia [ES].
Filming of a documentary
Also, between the 19th and the 27th September in Bodegas Qumrán and the Cultural Center of Peñafiel there will be filmed the documentary entitled Qumran: a Multidisciplinary Exploration of Space, produced by The DK <projection> and sponsored by this same winery. This documentary explores the multidisciplinar relationship among music, architecture, digital arts and wine-growing through Ángel Arranz´s works and Bodegas Qumran´s architecture. Arranz takes the south façade of this building as an abstract mathematical model to create his three compositions, using a personal poetic.
Bodegas Qumran is one of the most innovative buildings in the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero. It was short-listed in 2010 in the category Young Architect of the Year in the Leaf Awards in London.
Coincidiendo con la puesta en marcha en la Ribera del Duero de la vendimia, sonidos e imágenes de vanguardia inspirados en la arquitectura de Bodegas Qumrán se van a poder escuchar y ver el lunes 26 de septiembre en el Centro Cultural de Peñafiel. Aquellos que ocupen las butacas de su auditorio van a asistir al preestreno del ciclo que lleva por título DK <qumran>: Entre Oriente y Occidente. El autor de este trabajo es el peñafielense afincado en Holanda, Ángel Arranz [1976], compositor, sonólogo y musicólogo, así como investigador asociado del Instituto de Sonología de La Haya y además, director artístico del grupo multidisciplinar The DK <projection>, encargado de llevar a cabo este novedoso evento.
El concierto comenzará a las 20:30 horas y cuenta con el patrocinio de Bodegas y Viñedos Qumrán y la colaboración del Ayuntamiento de Peñafiel.
DK <qumran> es un espectáculo multimedia monográfico conformado por tres composiciones de Ángel Arranz basadas e inspiradas en Bodegas Qumrán. Esta bodega vanguardista de la Ribera del Duero ha sido diseñada por el estudio de arquitectura Konkrit Blu de Barcelona. En este recital, compuesto por música instrumental con asistencia de medios electrónicos en vivo, actuarán solistas y artistas internacionales de reconocido prestigio como son el saxofonista Josetxo Silguero, el percusionista Raphaël Simon y la artista visual Beatriz del Saz. El preestreno que tendrá lugar en la villa ribereña será el colofón de un documental producido y rodado días antes por The DK <projection>.
Como explican desde esta plataforma, en este desafío de amplio espectro cultural, “el diálogo entre arquitectura y música propuesto por Konkrit Blu y Ángel Arranz pretende continuar una tradición artística universal interdisciplinar no explorada a fondo en la historia de España”. Indican que “esta senda arranca en Florencia en 1436 con la colaboración entre el arquitecto Filippo Brunelleschi y el maestro de capilla Guillaume Dufay, y no vuelve a materializarse hasta los siglos XX y XXI”, con, entre los escasos ejemplos, la colaboración en 1958 entre los arquitectos Le Corbusier, el compositor y arquitecto Iannis Xenakis y el compositor Edgard Varèse en el Pabellón Philips de Bruselas; el proyecto para la obra del compositor Luigi Nono Prometeo, realizado junto con la contribución del arquitecto Renzo Piano en 1984 en Venecia y Milán; o más recientemente, el tándem en 2004 entre el arquitecto Lars Spuybroek y el artista sonoro Edwin van der Heide para la instalación de la escultura sonora interactiva Son-O-House, en la pequeña ciudad holandesa de Son-e-Breugel.
La primera de las piezas del ciclo, Qumrán para saxofón bajo y electrónica, será estrenada el 19 de noviembre en el XXIII Festival Internacional de Música Electrónica Punto de Encuentro en Valencia.
Grabación de un documental
De la misma forma los días 19 al 27 de septiembre tendrá lugar en Bodegas Qumrán y en el auditorio del Centro Cultural de Peñafiel, la filmación del documental Qumrán: Una Exploración Multidisciplinar del Espacio, producido por The DK <projection> y patrocinado por la elaboradora ribereña, el cual investiga la relación multidisciplinar entre música, arquitectura, arte digital y viticultura a través de la obra de Ángel Arranz y del edificio de la bodega. Arranz toma la fachada sur del edificio como modelo matemático abstracto para la creación de sus tres composiciones, desplegando una poética particular. Este ciclo de composiciones dotará a su vez de estructura argumental al audiovisual.
La obra de Qumrán, una de las edificaciones más vanguardistas de la Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero, resultó nominada en 2010 en la categoría Joven Arquitecto del Año de los Leaf Awards de Londres.
